WordPress Development for Beginners: Building Themes (Sold Out)

This year at WordCamp, we are splitting up the beginners day into three workshops, one of the workshops will be WordPress Development for Beginners: Building Themes.

The post below originally appeared on Sideway8.

This is going to be a fun WordCamp this year. Last year we added a “beginners day” and we had 200 sign up. I was asked by the other organizers to lead this track. I know I can’t do this all by myself so I have asked Micah Wood (a good friend and an amazing developer) to help lead this.

This is specifically for people who either know other frameworks and want to learn how to build within WordPress or for people who know how to hack at a theme but want to know how to do it “correctly”. We will be assuming that people in this track will already be familiar with CSS, HTML, PHP, Git (conceptually speaking) and have some local development experience.

So if you are looking to attend the track and learn the ins and outs of WordPress theming, make sure you show up on March 18th and have the following installed:

We are also looking for other WordPress ninjas (developers) to help us during the sessions. Please let us know if you are interested in helping.

  1. Your post ends in the link “… let us know if you are interested in helping.”. However this links goes to the “Become A WordCamp Atlanta Sponsor” page. Did I miss something?

  2. Yay – it’s time for WordCamp again. I’m also looking forward to this Beginner’s Day, and excited for how it’s split up into tracks. Although I’m still working my way through learning how to customize a WP site, I need to quickly ramp up on the development side in order to successfully work on and complete a redesign/rebuild of our theatre’s website (plus my own website, and ramp up to do freelance and/or job search). Any words of advice for me?! (big cheezy grin)

    • If you can setup a local development environment, know HTML, CSS and can follow PHP I think you can go to the dev on Friday. I highly recommend getting familiar with Mamp and Git, meaning, do more than just have it installed on your computer but get used to doing stuff in it.

      • I already have MAMP installed — installed it last year to start dabbling with reworking the theatre website on my local. I’m well versed in HTML & CSS (work in it daily); will brush up on PHP; and will look into Git. I will also get Sublime Text (I’ve been wanting it for a while). I already use Transit as my FTP program – hope that’s ok — but I also have Filezilla if necessary. Thanks for the reply!
