WordPress Design for Beginners: Customizing Themes

This year at WordCamp, we are splitting up the beginners day into three workshops, one of the workshops will be the WordPress Design for Beginners.

The WordPress platform is a magnet for those who want to take matters into their own hands, who want complete control over their websites and want to be independent in running them. WordPress does make it really easy to completely customize a website. If you have a bit of knowledge of HTML and CSS, there is nothing you can’t change.

We’ll cover CSS, explain hex codes vs rgb vs cmyk, discuss dpi/ppi, and then use that knowledge to walk through a theme customization.

  1. Sounds perfect! Hope there are lots of hand-outs so we can process the information given to us.
Great Peach logo, by the way!

    • We’ll do our best to help you process everything during the workshop, Edie.
Credit for the design work on the site – including the peach logo – goes to Nicky Pink.

  2. I am not a beginner because I have been a self taught blogger for two years. Although, I admit to having many stumbling blocks and may need to work back to the beginning. Will I be bored, or is this a good idea?

    • We don’t think you’ll be bored. I see that your site is built on WordPress.com. Some of the customization features we’ll discuss are not fully available on WordPress.com sites without addons.

  3. Kathy and all,
I’d like to be put on the waiting list for the Friday Beginning Design: Customizing Themes Workshop. I’ll miss the weekend, but could manage the Friday classes.

    Thanks!

  4. Is CSS knowledge essential for this class? I have some basic HTML experience, but have not worked with CSS.

I’m debating between the design class and the 101 class. The 101 class seems a bit too introductory to me since I’ve worked with photos and postings and roles, etc.

  5. Kathy: I know enough to be dangerous. Will you be discussing properties like float and @media ? Also hope to learn more about selectors and the order of css processing. Do we need anything special installed on our laptop for the class? I hope you will talk some about using the Chrome “inspect” tool.

    • Charlie — We’ll be getting into floats and media queries a bit, but not too deep. Order of CSS processing for sure, as well as Chrome’s “inspect element”. The class will have quite a few beginners in it, so we’ll go more wide than deep, but we have a lot of time to cover a lot of areas.

  6. I purchased a ticket. Are there any materials I should firmly grasp prior to the class? Is there an environment needed to follow along. I use slick edit.
